Streambox is Partner in CNN’s Emmy Award-Winning Digital Newsgathering Project

SEATTLE — Jan. 15, 2008 — Streambox, Inc. is among the key partners behind a CNN digital newsgathering project that has won a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). CNN received the Emmy for “development and implementation of an integrated and portable IP-based live, edit, and store-and-forward digital newsgathering system.” The 59th annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards were presented Jan. 7 on the opening night of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Streambox® ACT-L3™ Newsgathering solution has played a key role in CNN’s groundbreaking digital newsgathering project, enabling the network to deliver high-quality breaking news reports from around the world. The project has been recognized as the first complete newsgathering tool that works over any existing IP infrastructure, affording reporters ultimate flexibility in terms of live and store and forward transmission, real-time content editing and monitoring, as well as voice communication. One example of the application of this technology is CNN’s remote coverage of the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in July 2006. Utilizing Streambox’s sophisticated encoding technology and video management systems, journalists were able to file hundreds of live reports with portable IP transmission gear that fit neatly into a backpack and yielded images delivered over IP-based networks in tandem with satellite uplinks, which proved significantly better than earlier technologies.

The Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards honor science, engineering, and technology achievements for broadcast, broadband and personal television. Specifically, the awards recognize excellence and advances in the use, creativity, and adaptation of technology that enhances or improves the consumer experience with media across multiple platforms.
