NHK Deploys New Streambox HD/SD Encoder for IP-based News Contribution

New Hybrid Encoder is Designed for High Quality, High Volume Live and File-Based
Video over Low Cost IP Networks

SEATTLE — Feb 4, 2009 —Streambox Inc. today announced the launch of the portable Streambox®
SBT3-9500 Video Transport Encoder, the latest in the company’s family of next-generation solutions for integrated HD/SD newsgathering and video transport. The SBT3-9500 Encoder enables broadcasters to get more HD and SD video back to the studio over a variety of low-data rate networks, including 3G, WiFi, WIMAX, the Internet, and satellite networks. The 9500 Encoder’s dual networking facilitates multiplexing and
de-multiplexing of a single video stream over two lower cost, lower data rate IP networks instead of utilizing more costly higher bandwidth options The video can be used for insertion into scheduled broadcasts or even live-to-air shots depending on broadcaster requirements.

Like all Streambox solutions, the SBT3-9500 is based on the industry-leading ACT-L3™ codec, enabling fast transmission and playout of high-quality HD and SD video streams over low-latency, low-data-rate IP networks. The solution encodes stunning, full-frame 1080i/720p HD video and NTSC/PAL SD video and audio. For live HD newsgathering, Streambox users will typically select encoding rates between 512 Kbps and 6 Mbps. For live SD newsgathering, data rates ranging from 256 Kbps to 4 Mbps are the norm.

Among the first to deploy the SBT3-9500 solution is Japanese broadcaster NHK. The deployment targets
IP-based newsgathering from a number of locations around the world that have traditionally proved challenging for contribution of high-quality video due to network limitations. NHK has deployed the small-form-factor hybrid HD/SD encoders, equipped with ACT-L3™ software, to its field reporters and foreign bureaus along with video management and playout systems at its Tokyo-based headquarters.

The SBT3-9500 incorporates advanced networking features into a single solution that field reporters can take on location for coverage of breaking news. Encoder presets enable users to set transmission speed, forward error correction, latency, HD or SD mode, etc. based on network conditions in the field. In addition, the compact encoder can be battery-operated for up to 2½ hours on an external battery pack or run on a car battery. The SBT3-9500 integrates with the entire suite of Streambox client/server products, including video management and playout solutions such as the Streambox® Store and Forward Server and the Streambox® Media Station.

“We are committed to helping broadcasters increase content ownership and reduce cost by developing solutions that are designed to deliver high quality, high volume video over low bandwidth IP networks such as 3G, WiFi, WIMAX, and the Internet,” said Bob Hildeman, chairman and CEO of Streambox. “The SBT3-9500’s ability to provide reliable HD and SD video from challenging locations sets it apart from other encoding solutions and makes it possible for users to contribute mission critical video without overextending resources and budgets.”
