Streambox Live: Moving the News without a Truck
Posted in Streambox Live, User Stories on 11. Jan, 2010
As the Capital of Illinois, Springfield gets a lot of attention from the state’s news producing television stations. Unfortunately, the largest city in the state, Chicago (DMA# 3), sits nearly 200 miles away. The challenge for news stations in Chicago and other Illinois cities is getting the news from Springfield to their viewers while keeping costs low. To send a Satellite truck the 200 miles to the Capitol means a multi-person crew, their expenses, satellite time and wear and tear on the truck. Another option that broadcasters have explored is truck rental. However, a one-day satellite truck rental can cost broadcasters about $2,500 plus the cost of space segment.
Rising to this challenge, a group of stringer reporters and producers in Springfield is turning to Streambox Live for the solution. With a bureau near the Capitol, the stringers easily cover every press conference with only a camera and laptop computer equipped with the free Streambox Live Encoding Software. Streambox Live is able to transmit the live feed through any IP network that is available including WiFi and 3G. Any news organization in Chicago or any city equipped with a Streambox decoder is then able to access the video from the Streambox Live server without the heavy costs of a satellite truck. Now, broadcasters only pay a fraction of the previous cost by only paying for video that they download.
Utilizing Streambox Live is a quick and easy way for broadcasters to utilize stringer or citizen reporters for access to news in a remote location. The Streambox Live Service provides free encoder software to television stations for distribution to crews in the field and citizen reporters to cover news anywhere anytime. Without the costs of using a satellite truck, transmission and other expenses, broadcasters can save over 8 times as much by using Streambox Live to capture the news.
