Troubleshooting Application
- I'm trying to go through a firewall and need to change the port on the Encoder. How can I tell the Decoder what port to listen on?
- When I start the Encoder the video screen plays for just a moment and then freezes. What happened?
- I changed the password on my system, and now when I restart the system it waits for me to put in a password before continuing.
- How can I protect my Streambox system from a virus, worm, or other type of malicious code?
- I cannot preview video in the Video
Preview window - it just shows a black box, although I am getting
video downstream.
- I'm trying to go through a firewall and need to change the port on the Encoder. How can I tell the Decoder what port to listen on?
You can stop the Decoder application and then use the /p switch from the Windows command line to restart, like this:
C:\Streambox\transport.exe bbcodec /p 1234
This example tells the Decoder to listen for an Encoder stream on port 1234.
Note that this is a "sticky" option - once you've set a given port, it will always use that port until you specify a different port.

- When I start the Encoder the video screen plays for just a moment and then freezes. What happened?
The Encoder application is optimized in such a way that it will only show the first ten frames of the captured video signal. This allows you to ensure you’re getting a video signal in, but frees up system resources needed by the Encoder. You can click on “Preview Encoder” or “Preview Original” to view ten more frames.
Please note that the images displayed in this window are not necessarily representative of the final signal quality.

- I changed the password on my system, and now when I restart the system it waits for me to put in a password before continuing.
If you need to change the system password, you must change it in two places in order for the account password to be in sync.
First, connect remotely to the system by using the Remote Desktop Client. Click on Settings from the Windows Start menu, and then choose Windows Security. This will bring up a dialog box with several choices. Click on “Change password”. Enter the old password (“demo”), enter the new password, enter it again to confirm, and click OK. Click Cancel to return to the desktop.
Next, click on Run from the Windows Start menu and type in this:
control userspassword2
before restarting. This will bring up the User Accounts control panel, and there will typically be only the Administrator account. Select the checkbox marked, “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer,” click Apply, then deselect that option and click Apply again. You will be prompted for a new password; change this to the new password you’ve just created and restart the system.
Ensure that the system restarts without prompting you for logon credentials. If it does ask for a password, ensure that you have followed the above steps correctly to sync up the passwords.
NOTE: Remember your password when you change it. Streambox Technical Support staff cannot help you with lost passwords.

- How can I protect my Streambox system from a virus, worm, or other type of malicious code?
Streambox does not recommend installing anti-virus software on an Encoder or Decoder system. Instead, you can counteract most threats by enabling port filtering and allowing traffic only through the ports you specify. This is intended for streaming over the public Internet; on a private LAN it is usually not necessary.
To enable port filtering, follow these steps:
- Attach a VGA monitor and USB keyboard to either the Encoder or Decoder (you will have to perform these steps for both systems).
- From the Windows Start menu, click on Settings and Network Connections.
- Right-click on the network connection for this system, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
- Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the menu, and click the Properties button.
- From the General tab of the TCP/IP Properties dialog, click on the Advanced button.
- In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog, click on the Options tab. Select TCP/IP Filtering and click the Properties button.
- Select the checkbox next to "Enable TCP/IP Filtering (All adapters)" .
- Select the checkbox under all three protocols that says "Permit only" and enter the following values:
TCP ports: 3389 (for use with Windows Remote Desktop)
UDP ports: 1770 (Streambox Video/Audio Multiplexed)
2051 (optional Store-and-Forward)
TCP/IP ports: None
If you never plan to use Windows Remote Desktop on this system, you may disable port 3389. Port 1770 must be open.
- Click OK to all dialog boxes to save your changes. You should not have to restart the system when finished.
Streambox systems shipped after 15 July, 2004, will have port filtering enabled as mentioned above.

- I cannot preview video in the Video
Preview window - it just shows a black box, although I am getting

On older systems this issue may occur. You can run DXDIAG (the
DirectX Diagnostic tool) from the Run command, and then go to the
Display tab and disable DirectX Hardware Acceleration. Making this
change should not affect the performance of the Streambox system.
This issue does not affect systems shipped after 1 January, 2005.
