Hearst Television Adopts Streambox Live for Entire 29-Station Broadcast Group

IP-Based Video Contribution Service Expands and Enhances News Coverage for Major U.S. Station Group

SEATTLE — Aug. 3, 2010 — Streambox® today announced that Hearst Television, one of the largest station groups in the U.S., has adopted the Streambox Live™ broadband video contribution service for all of its 29 television stations. With Streambox Live, local news teams have a highly flexible and cost-effective alternative for field newsgathering that enables them to stream live or file-based video over low-bandwidth IP networks.

“Streambox Live is an important link in our efforts to provide the best local news programming possible, by gathering more live content faster and directly from the field,” said Martin Faubell, vice president of engineering at Hearst Television. “With Streambox Live, our field news teams can be more nimble and responsive in covering breaking news, wherever the location.”

Based in New York City, Hearst Television reaches about 18 percent of total U.S. viewing households. The station group has purchased a corporate license for Streambox Live as part of its “Next Generation Newsroom Project,” a strategy designed to enhance newscasts with more live reporting from the field. Rather than hold news for regularly scheduled newscasts, Hearst news teams augment station coverage by producing live streaming video for station websites as well as edited packages for broadcast. With the Streambox Live encoding software, field news teams can easily capture, encode, and stream video from areas in which it would be costly or impractical to deploy an SNG vehicle — bringing a new level of immediacy to Hearst newscasts. Once the video is uploaded to the cloud-based Streambox Live server, local news producers can browse, download, and decode selected video for broadcast.

“Hearst Television is not only one of the largest U.S. station groups, but its local stations are well-known for their award-winning news coverage. Therefore, Hearst’s selection of Streambox Live is important industry recognition of our technology and the value it brings to field news operations,” said Bob Hildeman, chairman and CEO of Streambox. “We are excited to work with Hearst Television going forward as it continues to broaden its live newsgathering capabilities.”
