Ian McDermott, chief engineer at WCAT (Wakefield Community Access Televison), talks about his stations experience using Streambox. The TV station is located in Wakefield, MA and is mainly used for public and government broadcast operations.
WCAT has been using Streambox’s mobile video encoder, the AVENIR Micro and the Streambox Cloud service to broadcast live from the field. The video is sent to the WCAT broadcast center where the video is broadcasted over the air, online and at the same time the video is sent to Streambox Cloud.
The Micro was used in a live mobile video transmission over 4 bonded cellular 3G/4G/LTE modems for the WCAT team to feed back to their studio from remote locations in town. Prior to Streambox, it was very difficult operating and getting live shots in areas with extremely low cellular coverage.
“Many of our locations have very high network security or low bandwidth so using LAN connections is not an option.”
With the help from Streambox’s customer support, Ian McDermott was able to resolve initial AVENIR Micro setup & configuration and connect reliably to the Micro’s software to control remotely.
When asked why WCAT chose Streambox over its competitors Ian answered, “Simply, customer service. When I called I got a person who was interested and eager to help me.”
Overall WCAT was looking for a “completely portable” solution with multiple connection options. Furthermore, the device was sought out because of its ease of use, which could be used by any of the staff, regardless of technical experience.
“We need a rock solid system” says Ian “that will not crash in the middle of a stream.”
WCAT’s many remote productions are “local government meetings and community events” and as such, cannot be interrupted due to technical errors. The Micro was able to stream reliably about “6-10GB” of bandwidth over 4 cell carriers, for three hour event.
The Streambox Cloud was also used by WCAT. The Cloud is a browser-based video management system that was used with great success.
The “recording feature” of the Streambox Cloud was “key” for WCAT in the event of a “recording device failure.”
Streambox made it “easier” and “faster” to setup and stream a live event. Also, it allowed production to use less “staff” and “equipment.”
